The Wentworth House Washington DC

Through a competitive process, the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) awarded LCOR the rights to develop a 32-acre site at the White Flint Metrorail station in North Bethesda, Maryland, the largest development of its kind in the Washington, DC area. LCOR partnered with DHPY for the design of the first building of the nearly $900 million development, The Wentworth. The Wentworth sets the standard for subsequent design and construction for the entire development.

The Wentworth is a $70 million, 18-story, 312-unit apartment building above a 65,000 SF, two-level Harris Teeter grocery store and cafe. The elegant masonry structure is clad in three colors of brick giving the building a strong residential character and helps reduce the buildings overall massing. The bricks grid pattern distinguishes The Wentworth in the urban design landscape. A fourth brick color is used as a special corner treatment the entire 18 stories, highlighting the buildings corner entrance.

Intended to appeal to a broad market of renters, ranging from young professionals to empty nesters, the apartments - a mix of studios, one- and two-bedrooms - are finished with granite countertops, stainless appliances, wood and tile floors.

The Wentworth offers generous amenities, in addition to a gourmet grocery and cafe. An exercise facility, business center and library are on the 2nd floor. Roof terraces offer alternate gathering places. The Club Room and swimming pool deck above the 18-story wing offer spectacular views to the west and south. The Sunset Terrace is located above the 15-story wing. Integration of a green roof above the grocery store supports the developers commitment to sustainability and enhances resident views.

The Wentworth exemplifies the level of design quality and creativity that must be in place to successfully launch this type of mixed-use, transit-oriented urban development model.
